Sustainable Living Tips
If you haven't already, it's time to change a few things in our daily lives that the environment and our oceans will thank us for. If you've been living under a rock and don't know that our marine environment is in a stage of peril at the moment then you should listen closely... Below are a few ways in which you can simply shift your way of thinking and live for the better of our seas each and every day...
Ocean friendly Daily Habits
BYO Coffee Cup
Whether its a mug from your grandmas cupboard or the cup of your palms...BYO!!
Re-useable shopping bags!
If you haven't caught onto this trend already then you're behind the game
No more Glad Wrap!
Get creative and make (or buy) some groovy reusable wrapping from your favourite fabric pattern and cover it in bees wax!
If you see it, grab it!
So its illegal to pick up dog poo, which is completely natural btw, yet we walk past plastic litter on every beach stroll??
Recycling is COOL
It takes a couple extra seconds in your day to check the packaging of an item, check if its got this sign, and recycle it the right way. Don't be lazy, thats not cool.
BYO Water Bottle OMG SRSLY
Australia has some of THE best drinking water on the planet so fill your empty cordial bottle or pasta sauce jar, water tastes better out of glass anyway.
EASY Plastic Free Shopping Alternatives
Local markets are your best bet to sweep up plastic free goodies however I'll show you how to shop for all your basics plastic free, at your local supermarket and surrounding shops. If I can do this, you can do this. Simply a little extra thought into the way you shop will put smiles on dolphins and a spring in your step!
BREAD
There is a local bakery on every corner, go say hi to the lovely ladies and ask for your favourite bread in a paper bag, too easy.
PASTA
Mamma mia! Too easy...choose the paper packaged option, tastes better.
MILK
Unless you're completely and utterly set on a milk brand that comes in a plastic bottle, there are plenty of delicious paper packaged milk products out there.
BUTTER
Same thing, different packaging...
BOTTLED WATER
This is essentially a crime. We have some of the best tasting water in Australia...so why pay for plastic packaging when it runs freely from your tap? You will save hundreds of dollars a year if you simply RE-FILL a drink bottle.
MEAT
Butcher men and women are probably one of the friendliest people on the block, bring your own tuppaware, looks yummier this way too.
TOMATOS
No comment needed here...
BROCCOLI
BYO produce bags should become a regular shopping habit.
CARROTS
Do you eat carrots like a rabbit? Trust me you can fit more into these mesh bags.
POTATOS
Potato, pattada, plastic frittata... no thanks.
LEAFY GREENS
These plastic filled bags of leaves have more air than green in them, BYO mesh bags and fill to your hearts desire...it actually works out to be cheaper this way!
