Why Choose PAPua New guinea as a freediving destination?

Freediving isn’t just about incredible ocean encounters...

If you're like us, you get excited by things that are off the beaten track. For us freediving isn’t just about incredible moments underwater. It’s about the journey it takes to get to the destination, the things you learn along the way… We choose to challenge ourselves above and below the water, and enrich our lives by experiencing cultures wildly different from our own. Here, the glorious ocean is a given, choose this trip because it will do all that, and so much more…

PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Papua New Guinea is a land that time forgot. 850 different languages and cultural groups. You walk down the road and find a clan with a different way of life to the one you just left. You ask “how do you say thank you in your language?” They say, “in which language?”

There’s hardly any roads, cars, scooters or bikes. Most people never travel far from their village. People don’t have ‘jobs’. They live in their villages, work in their gardens, go fishing, build houses from scratch, care for their family. Wealth is communal. There’s no garbage collection, because there’s hardly any waste. Canoes are carved from trees and when it’s been dry, you drink coconut water instead.

They live more ‘sustainably’ than our gadgets, money and good intentions ever could. If you need to shake up your perspective, this is the place.

An experience money truly can’t buy. You just have to come and live it.

ACCOMODATION

Nusa Island Retreat has a style and charm that is a fresh and a welcome change from your conventional holiday destination. Located on the outer reaches of the Niugini Islands, New Ireland is considered one of the safest and most relaxed provinces in Papua New Guinea with welcoming Melanesian hospitality. The Retreat is situated only a couple of minutes boat ride from the capital of Kavieng, making it perfectly positioned to the conveniences of town, yet far enough to be a world away!

The Retreat is set on a sheltered white sandy point which offers safe swimming and encompasses picturesque views back across the aqua blues of Kavieng Harbour. It exudes a relaxed and easy going feel from the moment you set foot on the beach and bury your toes in the sand.

Room Layout | 4 Single Beds per room

  • Accommodation is in the form of high quality, comfortable, free-standing, traditional “island style” bungalows which are both sympathetic and blend into the natural environment.

  • All rooms are equipped with mosquito netting, quality mattresses, bed linen & towels.

  • Bungalows offer private ensuite with dry compost toilet & cool shower bathroom facilities

Meet the Locals

This is Issac, a young boy growing up on Nusa Island. We met him on one of our first days on the island where he eagerly showed us around his home, introduced us to his friends and showed us the simple ways in which they entertain themselves with endless laughter.

Freedive Training

Our experienced instructors will create a specific freedive training program for the week tailored to you and your experience. The conditions for freediving are close to perfect! Glassy surfaces, deep blue and warm temperatures.

Your Safe Haven

Our locally inspired accomodation is nestled on a small island just off New Ireland. It’s a bare foot policy where the local dogs protect your every move. Watch as the world goes by from the numerous picturesque spots over looking the water.

Snorkel Sites

Each boat day we will get the chance to spend some time exploring a nearby snorkel site, these can range from reef slopes, to sheer reef drop offs and sunken wrecks!

faq’s

  • Qantas and Air Niugini fly to Port Morseby daily. You then fly from Port Morseby to Kaveing.

  • Kavieng is a relatively small, compact town that can easily & safely be explored on foot. For an abundance of locally grown produce and cultural charm, the markets are located just across the bay from Nusa Island. Fridays and Saturdays are usually the busiest days, however, a visit on any day makes for an interesting and interactive experience. There are a range of local style 'trade stores' that stock all kinds of trinkets, from food & variety to haberdashery & hardware. There are a couple of supermarkets that focus on more western style fare, not to mention a well stocked pharmacy which provides good advice on lotions & potions.

  • There is no ATM at Nusa Island Resort. We recommend exchanging money in Port Morseby or prior to arrival. There are ATM’s in Kaveing.

  • One of our instructors, Georgie, is a registered nurse and will be available to you at any time. Kaveing has limited medical facilities. Please come with a full supply of any medication or supplies you may need.

  • Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for this trip.

  • Diving with your own gear is always more comfy and effective, so if you love what you currently use, please bring it! Mask & snorkel, Fins, Weight belt (you can hire weights), Wetsuit- the water is 28-30 degrees, but we will be the water for a long time and you will need sun protection. We recommend light 2-3mm wetsuits or spring suits. If you have multiple options, bring them! Hood & socks if you have them.

  • If you don’t have your own gear, that is ok! You will be able to hire a wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins from the local dive shop. Please note we cannot guarantee the quality of gear as this is an external rental. It will also not be freedive specific gear. If you would like to purchase your own mask and fins, please get in touch and we would be happy to help you.

  • Yes, our beachfront bungalows are quad share. They are very spacious, with separate beds, and many common areas at the resort to have your own space. By the end of the week you will have great new friends.

  • Nusa Island Resort is able to cater to most dietary requirements. Please let us know well in advance so they have time to prepare.

  • The resort does not have wifi, however the local carriers have good cover on the island.

  • Australian passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival in Port Morseby. Passports must be valid for more than 6 months, return or onward travel must be provided and you may be required to show you have sufficient funds. Other Nationalities are advised to check with the PNG Immigration Office to confirm current regulations.

  • Kaveing is one of the safest areas of PNG, where you can explore freely and enjoy local hospitality. When transiting through Port Morseby, it is strongly recommended that you remain in the airport, or travel straight to your hotel using their own transport. If you choose to extend your stay in PNG, please review travel warnings for your travel destinations.

  • Whilst mosquitoes aren't usually a problem around the Retreat, malaria is endemic throughout PNG and we suggest that you speak to a doctor regarding anti-malarial options and suggested vaccinations when travelling to this region. Using insect repellent and wearing light, long sleeved/legged clothing is a good preventative measure around dawn & dusk. Mosquito nets are provided in all rooms so you can rest well at night.

TESTIMONIALS

Liv For The Sea X PNG was phenomenal beyond words. Liv and Georgie are an absolute dream to travel and dive with. They created the trip of a lifetime for all of us. These two are gorgeous humans with massive hearts who care so much about creating amazing experiences in and out of the water for everyone. I dived under Georgie’s guidance for the week, and she was so thorough in her teaching and support. She spent time one-on-one with each of us, connecting with our goals and helping us overcome any obstacles to getting there. I was fairly new to freediving and still mastering some of the basics, and Georgie took me aside before we went out to practise equalising so I could nail it in the water. Thanks to her, I built so much confidence as a freediver on this trip. The vibes were immaculate. Everyone was thriving in the water, PBs were happening left, right and centre, and we were all truly having the time of our lives. This trip was also incredibly special because of the time dedicated to connecting with the community and the land. My heart is so full of appreciation for all of it. This is so much more than a Freediving trip.” - Nikki
